Growing your own herb garden is an engaging distraction, that doesn’t require extensive knowledge, nor a great deal of time (although I’m personally not strapped for time, at the moment!). Better still, growing your own herbs can seriously elevate your culinary game while saving you a few bucks! Herb garden kits indoors are well worth the effort.
While an outdoor herb garden is a good option, it does require plenty of sunlight (about 6 hours of exposure a day), available land and adequate drainage.
For today’s write up, we’re gonna focus on indoor herb growing kits.
Herb Garden Kits Indoors
By Jaunty Staff
As we are in a tighter, suburban neighborhood, indoor kits work really well for us. They don’t require a great deal of space and, tending your own garden is still a better deal than buying herbs (fresh or dried) from the store, over the long run.
Indoor herb Garden Benefits
First, space isn’t a problem. Herb kits with a relatively small footprint can yield a families worth of herbs, all year long.
Second, growing indoors (preferably near the kitchen) means fresh herbs are always at your fingertips for more flavor options at mealtime.
Third, indoor herb kits are natural, pesticide free and organic. You control what goes into your garden.
Finally, whether you have plenty of natural sunlight or precious little, you can successfully grow your herb garden with the right kit.
Cooking with fresh herbs releases the flavors far better than using dried. When you treat yourself to a gourmet restaurant (remember when we used to go to restaurants 🙁 ) it’s amazing how often fresh herbs & spices are woven into each course.
Make your garden a mix of the tried and true herbs you love and a few more to experiment with. Adding the “gourmet” touch of fresh herbs to meals is well within reach!
Our friends at Eating Well put together a great guide to cooking with fresh herbs. It’s a useful resource when hunting for ideas.
Better Quality at a Lower Cost
When visiting the grocery store, buying herbs can be quite expensive. A sprig of fresh basil or cilantro can be $2 to $4 bucks a pop. That’s generally more than if you’d have purchased a 4 pack of seeds for your own garden, which could yield a year’s worth of herbs.
Plus, it’s not uncommon in our home to throw away partially used herb and spice containers. The longer herbs & spices sit in your cabinet, the less flavorful they become, until it’s time to dispose of them.
Indoor herb garden kits provide the freshest flavors, at the best price. Note: Yes, purchasing an LED kit is initially more expensive, requiring more time to recoup your investment.

Herb Garden Kits Indoors – LED kits versus Natural Light
Sunny Location? – If your home is blessed with about 6 hours a day of direct natural light, growing an indoor herb garden requires less preparation. A natural light, indoor herb garden is the least expensive way to start your project. Buy seeds, soil, pots and you’re on your way.
Absent the perfect spot to have your garden bask in the sun for 6 hours a day, lamp driven indoor gardens are a great alternative and also come with some added benefits.
Using LED grow light kits
The spectrum of light from LED systems provides plants with optimal light, for the right amount of time. Consequently, Herb gardens grow about 5 times faster under LED than with natural light.
In terms of cost, LED lighting is energy efficient. Using the 20 watt system 15 hours a day and growing 6 plants cost about $1.33 a month. LED bulbs are also designed to last for 50,000 hours
How Does Hydroponics Work?
Hydroponics is a fancy term for plants grown in water versus soil. The root system of the herbs are suspended in water (Some of the systems we recommend below are hydroponic).
Typically, hydroponic plants grow about 30% faster than when grown in soil. Also, instead of adding fertilizer to your soil, liquid nutrients are added to the water (liquid nutrients are often included in the herb kits & are readily available online). Since you’re dealing with water rather than soil, hydroponic systems can be a little less messy to work with.
