Lake Placid Olympic Museum reopens
In 2019 I had the opportunity to visit Lake Placid. In March of 2023 the Lake Placid museum reopened. As an avid hockey mom, a visit to the Herb Brooks Arena (site of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” game) was on the schedule. Although the arena had a respectful frozen in time feel, I loved it.
Jump to 2023 and I’ve returned to Lake Placid to find a newly renovated Lake Placid museum and arena (the actual ice rink from 1980 appears untouched, thankfully!). Today the scoreboard from the infamous game is in the lobby frozen with the score: “USA 4 – USSR 3” In the background is the newsfeed of the last few minutes when Al Michaels asked “do you believe in miracles?”.
In 2019 I visited the small Lake Placid museum to the Olympics and the 1980 game. While exciting to a hockey fan, it was simple. In 2023, it has evolved into a comprehensive museum of the 1932 and 1980 Olympics. A bobsled with a video gives even the casual sports fan a sense of what the athlete sees. Olympic torches and medals are beautifully displayed. Skates, skis, posters, clothing are displayed from years of Olympics. For even the casual Olympics fan this is a visit well worth its $10 admission.

Lake Placid is a quaint town to visit year round. Skiing and snowshoeing in the winter to boating and lake swimming in the summer, there are plenty of activities. Downtime can be filled with a stroll thru the downtown with shops and dining options. No matter when you visit, this visit offers an insight into the area and Olympics history.
