Thanksgiving in New York

Traditionally Thanksgiving finds our family at home with our loved ones.  But this year was different.  We knew traveling during Thanksgiving might come with some challenges.  We decided to forgo looking for the best “fixed menu, fixed price” traditional Thanksgiving dinner, which could never match up to our traditional home-cooked dinner.  So, we decided to complement our unique trip with a fabulous meal at the Michelin Star restaurant, Hutong.

From its home in Hong Kong, Hutong opened in NYC in 2019 serving contemporary and occasionally fiery Northern Chinese cuisine, dim sum and cocktails. When entering you see the mirrors and chandeliers of the elegant Art Deco style of 1920’s Shanghai.  W proceed to our table down a narrow hallway between two soaring glass stacks of wine bottles.

The restaurant was abuzz with filled tables.  Clearly we were not the only diners deciding to forgo turkey!  We started with their iconic (and often Instagram-ed) Yu Xiang Fried Dumplings.  Next the colorful 8 piece Dim Sum platter was excellent.  Being a Dim Sum fan, I would have ordered another round…but timing was perfect when the Peking Duck with Pancakes signature dish arrived.  As a party of 3 diners we had the half order, if you can gather a few more diners to join you, your Peking Duck will be delivered with a table presentation (video on their Instagram)!

Though our meal was not traditional, we did catch a few traditional events: Macy’s parade, skaters at Rockefeller Center, Christmas Market at Bryant Park, a candle lit St Patrick’s Cathedral….filling us with the thanks and gratitude of the season!
